Mui Dien at a glance

Mui Dien (Mũi Điện) is a cape on the southern coast of Phu Yen with a lighthouse on top and a small beach below, called Bai Mon. The same place appears under the name Mui Dai Lanh (Mũi Đại Lãnh) in many sources, including the fee resolution, which lists the scenic area as Bai Mon and Mui Dai Lanh.

A winding staircase leads up to the lighthouse, and a further staircase leads down to the beach. Rocky slopes fall to the sea on both sides. The national tourism site suggests going at sunrise, but it does not give a fixed opening time before dawn.

Phu Yen is the former province that joined Dak Lak province on 1 July 2025. Travelers still use the name Phu Yen for this coast.

Is Mui Dien really the easternmost point?

The short answer is that official pages disagree.

Mui Dien is often called Vietnam's easternmost point. A detailed page of the national tourism authority says that Mui Doi, about 50 km further south, lies more to the east. A current destination page from the same source promotes Mui Dien as the easternmost point on the Phu Yen coast. Both statements stand side by side, and neither settles the question for the whole country.

For your plans, this means one thing. Go for the view and the early light, not for a record. The sun does not necessarily touch Mui Dien first in Vietnam, and sunrise times shift through the year, so look up the time for your date.

Planning a sunrise visit

Check the sunrise time

Look up the time for your date and plan to be on the stairs before first light. The sky starts to brighten well before the sun is up.

Confirm access the night before

Ask your hotel to call ahead, or ask the staff at the entrance.

Watch your step

The staircase is long and can be damp in the morning. Wear shoes with grip and carry a torch or your phone light.

Bring water and a layer

Bring water, a hat for later in the day and a light layer for the early hours.

Bai Mon beach and the water

The beach below the cape is reached by the second staircase. Calm water in a photo is not a swimming clearance. Do not count on lifeguards, and stay out of the water in surf or after heavy rain.

Parts of the Vietnamese coast are military zones, and the German Foreign Office advises against entering such areas, which are not always marked clearly. Follow every sign and instruction from staff at the lighthouse and the beach.

For a more relaxed swim, see our Phu Yen beaches guide. If you want a resort-style beach after your trip, the beaches of Nha Trang lie to the south.

Getting there and pairing it with other stops

Mui Dien lies on the southern part of the Phu Yen coast. Plan it as a half-day or sunrise trip from Tuy Hoa by taxi, hired driver or guided tour. If you ride a rented motorbike, check that your license is valid for it and that your insurance covers it. Motorbike crashes are common, and the UK government warns about this.

The published southern route pairs Mui Dien with the memorial to the "ships without numbers" in Vung Ro Bay. That makes a good combination for one day. The best months are February to August, while the heaviest rain falls from September to December. See the weather guide for monthly averages.

Coming from Nha Trang or Quy Nhon, take the train to Tuy Hoa first. Our getting there page lists the options.
